Reliance Jio Surpasses China Mobile to Become World’s Leading Mobile Operator in Data Traffic

Reliance Jio, India’s leading telecommunications company, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing China Mobile to become the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic consumption. According to recent data from global analytics firm Tefficient, the total traffic on the Jio network has soared to 40.9 exabytes during the January-March quarter, exceeding China Mobile’s 38 exabytes.

Notably, Jio also boasts the second-largest 5G subscriber base globally, with an impressive 108 million subscribers. The company attributes over 28% of its total wireless data traffic to 5G users, indicating a strong adoption rate for next-generation connectivity.

Despite its remarkable growth in data traffic and subscriber base, Jio faces challenges in boosting its average revenue per user (ARPU). Analysts point out that the addition of low-value JioBharat phone users and promotional unlimited 5G plans have kept ARPU stagnant for three consecutive quarters.

However, analysts anticipate a positive outlook for Jio’s revenue conversion, especially with the potential tariff hikes expected after the upcoming general elections. It’s projected that tariff hikes of 20-25% could occur soon, which would likely bolster Jio’s financial performance.

In addition to its mobile services, Jio’s fixed wireless home broadband offering, AirFiber, has seen robust demand across 5,900 towns. The average daily data usage for AirFiber subscribers has reached 13 gigabytes, showcasing the popularity of high-speed internet connectivity provided by Jio.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his satisfaction with Jio’s success, emphasizing its role in strengthening India’s digital infrastructure. Ambani highlighted Jio’s pioneering efforts in 5G transformation and its contribution to increasing smartphone and internet penetration in the country.

Moreover, Jio’s financial performance has been impressive, with the company becoming the first Indian company to cross the ₹100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits. This achievement underscores Jio’s significant impact on both the telecommunications industry and the Indian economy as a whole.

In summary, Reliance Jio’s ascent to the top of the global mobile operator hierarchy reflects its relentless focus on innovation, technological advancement, and customer-centric offerings. With its strong market position and ambitious growth strategies, Jio continues to spearhead India’s digital revolution and redefine the future of telecommunications worldwide.
